Spiritual Direction

Adult Spiritual Formation by Suzanne Broussard

“The first thing we need to do is set apart a time and a place to
be with God and God alone.”  ~ Henri Nouwen

1. What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is a mentoring relationship between a seeker and a spiritual guide.
Spiritual direction explores a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being  human.
Spiritual direction is a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.

2. I’m seeking a spiritual director.

Each person seeking a spiritual director needs to take reasonable steps to verify the competency of any potential spiritual director.
It is recommended you interview each potential spiritual director before meeting in person.

Questions in your interview:
What spiritual formation and theological education do you have in spiritual direction?
What is your personal experience tending your own prayer, meditation, and contemplative life?
What is your experience as a spiritual director? How many years? In what environments? What are you most interested in spiritually?
How do you continue your education and supervision for your spiritual direction ministry?
What ethical guidelines do you abide by?
What type of engagement agreement will we establish to clarify roles and responsibilities in our spiritual direction relationship?

3. Where will I meet with my spiritual director?
You and your spiritual director will agree on a convenient location and time for meeting, usually once a month for an hour.

4. How much does it cost?
Many spiritual directors request a fee, some receive your free-will donation, and others offer their time with no expectation of anything in return.

5. How do I find a competent spiritual director?

Contemplative Prayer Services in the Sanctuary

9:00-9:45am, and open to everyone.

For God Alone my Soul Rests in Silence

“The first thing we need to do is set apart a time and a place to be with God and God alone.” ~ Henri Nouwen

In the tradition of the earliest days of the Church, Christian worshipers saw the rising of the sun and lighting of the evening lamps as symbolic of Christ’s victory over death. This prayer service, follows an ancient pattern of congregational prayer, focusing upon the praise of God and prayer for God’s creation rather than the proclaiming of the Word. Passages are chosen that will encourage the community in its praise and prayer.

You are invited to come for an experience of contemplative prayer designed to be a restful moment, a time to pause in the busyness of life and enter into the Sabbath on Friday. Included will be moments to savor experience, a focus on simplicity and a cultivated spaciousness through reading, and silence.
